TIKTOK CAUGHT SURVEILLING USERS
TikTok employees based in China were caught spying on U.S. reporters through their social media accounts, according to an internal investigation.
How TikTok spied: Employees of ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company based in Beijing, obtained the private data of four U.S.-based tech journalists from Forbes and the Financial Times. The ByteDance employees gained access to those journalists’ IP addresses as well as data from users connected to those reporters.
Back up: Earlier in 2022, Forbes accused ByteDance of spying on journalists – specifically through the social media giant’s Internal Audit and Risk Control department.
At the time, this department was investigating a leak of internal discussions to tech journalists.
That department is based in Beijing and run by an executive named Song Ye who reports directly to the company’s CEO Rubo Liang.
This accusation triggered an internal investigation by ByteDance.
The internal investigation found that while internal audit groups at ByteDance regularly investigate code of conduct violations, these particular employees “misused their authority to obtain access to TikTok user data.”
The employees were all terminated and ByteDance’s CEO admitted in an internal e-mail that public trust in the company will be “significantly undermined by the misconduct.”
Who remembers back in 2020, then-President Donald Trump warned that the Chinese-controlled app:
“potentially allow[ed] China to track the locations of federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage.”
