JUNK FOOD PYRAMID
One of the most influential nutrition groups, responsible for shaping national food policy, took millions of dollars from some of the biggest producers of obesity-causing junk food.
Back up: The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) has been shaping food policy since 1917, with thousands of dieticians using their standards.
The details: Thousands of documents, ranging from financial records to tax returns and even internal e-mails, show that the academy took more than $4 million in donations from the food industry between 2011 and 2017.
These companies include Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle, Hersey, Kellogg’s, and Congra [which owns Duncan Hines and Chef Boyardee].
They also take money from trade groups like the Sugar Association and the Corn Refiners Association.
They make up some of the world’s largest producers of sodas, sugar, candy, and ultra-processed foods.
Big picture: These foods are linked to obesity, diabetes, and more.
Pay for play: Companies that paid “sponsorship” fees were given “specific rights and benefits” according to the records obtained in this study.
Bigger picture: This academy has tremendous influence. Their members lobby Congress on health policy and even serve on Congressional advisory committee’s that shape the federal government’s Dietary Guidelines for America.
This information was published in the peer-reviewed journal Public Health Nutrition by an investigative group called U.S. Right to Know which obtained more than 50,000 pages of documents mostly through Freedom of Information Act requests.
