Joe Biden spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine. There is no official transcript of the call, but if you read the details provided by each side, you might think you’re reading about two totally different calls.

Big picture: The U.S. and China are the two most powerful nations on Earth. The U.S. has already imposed massive economic sanctions on Russia. China, however, has increased its economic activity with Russia since the war with Ukraine began, essentially giving it a lifeline to survive western sanctions.

The purpose of Biden’s call with Xi was to try and prevent China from giving more aid to Russia. Here’s how each nation says the call went:

🇺🇸 According to the US: “The conversation focused on Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine… [Biden] described the implications and consequences if China provides material support to Russia as it conducts brutal attacks against Ukrainian cities and civilians.”

A senior U.S. official told Axios that Biden did not specifically request that Xi push Vladimir Putin to end the war.

🇨🇳 According to China, Xi criticized the west’s financial sanctions, telling Biden: “Sweeping and indiscriminate sanctions would only make the people suffer. If further escalated, they could trigger serious crises in global economy and trade, finance, energy, food and industrial and supply chains, crippling the already languishing world economy and causing irrevocable losses.”

According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Xi told Biden that “the Ukraine crisis is not something we want to see.”
Take a look at the two words highlighted in yellow and bold above. The U.S. refers to the events in Ukraine as an “invasion” while China refers to it as a “crisis.” Invasion implies that Russia is the aggressor. Crisis is intentionally ambiguous.

It’s worrisome that China is so clearly unbothered by Biden’s warnings. It makes you wonder what the two-hour call was really like.

Is Joe Biden mentally able to defend U.S. interests against someone like Xi?

I’m afraid to answer that question.
