So we can better understand the conflict in Ukraine, I borrowed the map from The Wall Street Journal. It is accurate as of the start of the Russian Conflict, so it won’t reflect new attacks that may have taken place since.
The first thing you should notice is the areas where Russia has crossed into Ukraine [red shading]. It’s crossed in areas they control or are allied with:
🇷🇺 Russia’s own border
🇧🇾 Belarus [their ally]
🇺🇦 Crimea [they took control of during Obama’s presidency]
That leaves the borders with Poland, Romania, and Moldova:
🇲🇩 Moldova has a bilateral agreement with Russia
🇷🇴 Romania is a western ally, part of NATO
🇵🇱 Poland is a western ally, part of NATO
A serious provocation would be if Russia messes around with the borders of the two NATO states above.
