UNITED STATES RESPONDS AFTER ONE AMERICAN IS KILLED BY IRANIAN DRONE STRIKE
The U.S. military carried out several precision airstrikes on Iranian-backed terrorists in Syria in retaliation for a drone attack that resulted in one American’s death.
How it went down, according to the Pentagon:
An Iranian drone killed one U.S. contractor and wounded five other servicemembers in Syria.
Shortly after the U.S. launched retaliatory strikes on the Syria-based, Iranian-backed terrorists.
What we know about the Iranian drone strike: The U.S. says it was carried out by a “one-way unmanned aerial vehicle” – in other words, these are sort of single-use kamikaze drones.
The drone “struck a maintenance facility on a Coalition base near Hasakah in northeast Syria at approximately 1:38 p.m. local time.”
What we know about the U.S. counter-attack: The Pentagon says they were carried out in a way that would “limit the risk of escalation and minimize casualties.”
Reports indicate 11 pro-Iranian terrorists were killed in the U.S. strikes.
They added: “We are postured for scalable options in the face of any additional Iranian attacks.”
A short history of U.S. troops in Syria: Since the rise of ISIS in 2014, the U.S. slowly ratcheted up our troop presence, peaking in 2017 when Trump wanted to quickly eliminate the threat once and for all. In 2018 Trump announced his desire to withdraw after completing the mission, but ultimately a “small number” were kept in the region and still remain to this day.
Zoom out: Earlier in March 2023, it was reported that Iran was enriching uranium near weapons-grade levels. And the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley warned that Iran is “several more months” away from an “actual nuclear weapon.”
This strike occurred just one day after Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping’s commute in Moscow. And less than 10 days after China, Russia, and Iran agreed to hold joint naval drills.
