THE OMNIBUS A GIFT FOR THE DEMOCRATS
The Omnibus the disastrous $1.7 trillion dollar, 4,155-page omnibus spending bill was voted on by eighteen Republicans who joined with Democrats to help them pass it through the Senate by a vote of 68-29.
Remember: The spending is bad enough on its face… But the especially traitorous part is that Republicans just won control of the House, giving us the power to control spending and reign in the Democrats. But this vote effectively abdicated that control back to Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats through most of 2023.
Senator Rand Paul correctly remarked: “We have completely and totally abdicated the power of the purse. Republicans are emasculated.”
This was a truly unprecedented abdication by Republicans. Rep. Chip Roy pointed out:
“Control of the House of Representatives have shifted from one party to the other five times since 1954. And in none of those years have we had the outgoing Congress pass a comprehensive spending bill in the lame-duck – that is after the election.”
Which Republicans voted for this bill?
Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO), Sen. John Boozman (R-AR), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Susan Collins (R-ME), John Cornyn (R-TX), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Rob Portman (R-OH), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Richard Shelby (R-AL), John Thune (R-SD), Roger Wicker (R-MS), and Todd Young (R-IN).
Republicans in the House are threatening retaliation.
Thirty-one members of the House GOP, led by Rep. Roy, said they plan to block “even the smallest legislative and policy efforts” coming from the 18 GOP Senators who voted with Democrats.
Big picture: This bill was voted on in the House and was gladly signed by Joe Biden.
