THE LAST OF HIS KIND
The United States hit a somber milestone.
Hershel “Woody” Williams, who was the last living World War II Medal of Honor recipient, passed away at the age of 98.
Woody was part of the 21st Marines and served heroically in the Battle of Iwo Jima. His unit landed on the island two days after the battle had begun. A combination of difficult terrain and the Japanese pillboxes [fortified bunkers] made for a deadly advance on the island.
The only way to penetrate the pillboxes was to get up close with a flamethrower to burn out the enemy. But most of the soldiers got picked off before they reached their targets. By February 1945, Woody was the last flamethrower left. Undeterred, he continued the mission alone. In just four hours, he took out 7 pillboxes, clearing enough ground for the Americans to advance and get behind the enemy.
In 1945, then-President Harry Trump awarded him the Congressional Medal of Honor for his “valiant devotion to duty.”
Rest in peace, sir.
