The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a religious liberty case where a high school football coach was fired for praying after games. And based on their questions, conservative justices seemed to support the coach.

Here’s the story: Joseph Kennedy was a high school football coach in Washington state from 2008 to 2015, where he began the practice of saying a prayer by himself after the game had concluded.

Eventually, students began to join him.

According to court documents, they evolved into motivational speeches with religious themes.

An opposing coach complained to Kennedy’s school principal.

The school told Kennedy to stop or continue doing it somewhere else.

Kennedy refused and was placed on leave.

Kennedy argues his First Amendment and religious freedom rights were violated.

The school argues that his prayers were a constitutional issue because he’s a government employee, and also because his prayers had a coercive effect on the students, pressuring them to join him.

The Justice’s questions: During oral arguments, Supreme Court Justices have an opportunity to ask the representative attorneys questions about their arguments.

You can infer what side the Justices are on by their questions:

Justice Sotomayor asked if it would be okay for the coach to wear a Nazi symbol on the field. [what a dolt] Kennedy’s attorney noted he is not aware of any such religions.

Justice Kavanaugh asked if the school would “fire someone making the sign of the cross before a game?”

Justice Alito asked if the school would punish someone for carrying a Ukrainian flag on school property.

Justice Thomas asked the school’s attorney: “If the coach, instead of taking a knee for prayer, took a knee during the national anthem because of moral opposition to racism, how would your school district respond? Would that be government speech?”

Coach Kennedy said: “Six years away from the football field has been far too long. I am extremely grateful that the Supreme Court is going to hear my case and pray that I will soon be able to be back on the field coaching the game and players I love.”
