A bipartisan group of senators [10 Republicans and 10 Democrats] reached a deal on the framework for a gun control bill that, if passed, would be the most significant change to gun rights in decades.
The bill framework includes:
enhanced background checks for people under 21
funding for mental health and school safety
protecting victims of domestic violence
state grants for red flag laws
penalties for straw purchasing
What it doesn’t include:
It does not raise the minimum age to buy a rifle
It does not ban ‘assault weapons’
Red flag laws are my number one issue with this proposed bill.
They allow law enforcement to preemptively seize a citizen’s firearms without due process if they are “determined to be a significant danger to themselves or others.”
So you want us to give the same people who categorized parents at school board meetings as ‘domestic terrorists’ the power to decide when someone is a “significant danger”?
No thanks.
Here are the 10 Senate Republicans who have already put their support behind this bill:
Cornyn, Tillis, Blunt, Burr, Cassidy, Collins, Graham, Portman, Romney Toomey
Joe Biden was asked about the bill and he believes it doesn’t go far enough:
“Obviously, it does not do everything that I think is needed, but it reflects important steps in the right direction.”
