If you said Dominion voting machines were an election security threat 18 months ago, you would be called a conspiracy nut and have your Twitter account banned. But today, the nation’s leading cybersecurity agency is warning of vulnerabilities as we head into the 2022 midterm elections… though they will still ban your youtube account today if you say it.
The headline: The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) is warning that Dominion electronic voting machines, which are used in at least 16 states, have software vulnerabilities that leave them open to hacking.
Let’s get into the weeds: This advisory report is written by University of Michigan computer scientist J. Alex Halderman, who argues that using electronic voting machines is dangerous because computers are vulnerable to hacking.
He says:
“…they are things that we should worry could be exploited by sophisticated attackers, such as hostile nation-states, or by election insiders, and they would carry very serious consequences.”
“Attackers could then mark ballots inconsistently with voters’ intent, alter recorded votes or even identify voters’ secret ballots.”
Halderman advocates for using hand-marked paper ballots, saying they’re the most secure method of voting.
The politics: This report goes out of its way to claim that the machines were not hacked during the 2020 election. But at the same time, it condemns the 16 states where they’re used, claiming they are not doing enough to protect from vulnerabilities…
Flashback: In 2019, Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren was leading a group of lawmakers raising alarm bells about electronic voting machines. She claimed they were “less secure than your Amazon account.” But during the 2020 election, it was no longer en vogue to make those claims.
So if my timeline is right…
2019: Electronic voting is not secure.
2020: The most secure election in world history
2022: Electronic voting is not secure.
…cool.
