Joe Biden Gets a Reality Check
It was a tough day at the office for whichever White House intern manages Joe Biden’s Twitter account.
The details: Two posts made from Joe Biden’s official @POTUS Twitter account got fact-checked by Twitter’s ‘Community Notes.’ One tweet tried to take credit for former President Trump’s accomplishments. The other was a lie about American wages.
Note: Community Notes is a crowd-sourced alternative to fact-checkers. It allows Twitter users to “collaboratively add context to potentially misleading Tweets.” If enough users find that note to be helpful, it is added as a ‘community note’ to the original tweet.
These are the Biden tweets and the community notes added to them:
1. Stealing credit: “One year after its launch, our Administration’s 988 suicide and crisis hotline has helped 5 million Americans when they needed it most.”
The Community Note read: “988 was signed into law in 2019 under the Trump Administration.”
2. Lie about American wages: “Right now, real wages for the average American worker are higher than it was before the pandemic, with lower-wage workers seeing the largest gains. That’s Bidenomics.”
The Community Note read: “The tweet’s claim about real wages contains a factual error. On 3/15/20 when US COVID lockdowns began real wages adjusted for inflation (AFI) were $11.15. As of 7/16/23 real wages AFI are $11.05.”
Sour grapes: White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre was asked about the second fact check, regarding wages. She simply replied: “We disagree.”
If you want to understand why Mark Zuckerberg released Threads, an app to challenge Twitter, this is a prime example. The people in charge don’t like that they can’t control Twitter. Thankfully, Threads is garbage. And user engagement is already down 50% from its first week.
