On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Regan was shot while leaving a labor meeting in Washington D.C. As he walked to his car, a man named John Hinckley Jr. shot at him six times. Three bullets hit others in the entourage. And one of the bullets hit Reagan in the lung, just missing his heart.
The president didn’t know he was shot, as a Secret Service agent shoved him into a car and drove him to the hospital. Upon arrival, the 70-year-old walked on his own into the hospital, despite having just been shot.
In good spirits: While preparing for surgery, Reagan told his wife: “Honey, I forgot to duck.”
The surgeons: “Please tell me you’re Republicans.”
The next day he was back to work, literally signing legislation from his hospital bed.
