HARNESSING THE POWER OF THE SUN
U.S. scientists announced that for the first time ever, they have successfully used nuclear fusion to produce a positive power output – a major breakthrough that could eventually lead to a limitless supply of clean energy.
Backup: Nuclear fusion is literally how the Sun gets its energy. And since the 1960’s scientists from more than 50 countries have been trying to recreate it here on Earth.
How does nuclear fusion work?
In the simplest terms, it’s when two small atomic nuclei are heated to the point where they combine into a single heavier one. This process releases massive amounts of energy. And releases no radioactive waste.
The breakthrough:
Up until now, scientists who had previously tried to harness nuclear fusion couldn’t produce more energy than they were putting in. But now, American scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California were able to achieve what is known as a “net energy gain” – where the output energy is more than the input.
The scientists put the atomic particles inside a polished diamond sphere with a hollow container.
Then they use 192 high-energy lasers to super-heat the capsule, compressing the atoms, which replicates the conditions inside the Sun.
The result: it produced 3MJ of energy after using 2MJ of energy to create the reaction.
The future: While it’s still a few decades away from the real-world application, this breakthrough paves the way for a legitimate source of renewable clean energy [not windmills and solar that rely on external conditions].
Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said:
“This milestone moves us one significant step closer [to having zero-carbon fusion energy] powering our society.”
