GOP PASSES THE PARENTS BILL OF RIGHTS

The GOP-controlled House passed the Parents Bill of Rights Act, legislation aiming at giving parents a say in their children’s education.

The numbers: The House voted 213 to 208 in favor of the bill.
5 Republicans and all Democrats voted against it, but the bill was able to pass thanks to several Democrats being absent.

What’s in the bill?

Its purpose is to make sure parents have the right to:

know what’s being taught in schools
see reading material available at libraries
be heard at school board meetings
view the public school budget
be alerted if a trans student is sharing bathrooms/lockers with their child

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said: “Empowering parents and promoting the well-being of children is a top priority of the House Republican majority.”

What the other side is saying: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said: “I can say what my progressive value is, and that is freedom over fascism.”

…she thinks parents wanting to be a part of their child’s education is “fascism”

What happens next?

It dies in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Sen. Chuck Schumer has already said he plans to veto the bill.

Big picture: The GOP House knows this bill has no chance of being passed by the radical Democrats that control the Senate. But it’s still smart politics for McCarthy and the House GOP to force Senate Democrats to kill it. Let them explain that to parents in their districts when re-election comes around.
