EPA FORCES RAIL COMPANY TO CLEAN UP THE MESS THEY MADE
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered the Norfork Southern rail company to cover all costs and actions necessary to clean up the chemical spill from the February 3, 2023 derailment in Ohio, but it has fallen short of ordering coverage for long-term medical expenses for residents.
A 150-car Norfork Southern train carrying an estimated 1 million pounds of hazardous chemicals like vinyl chloride derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. Those chemicals were then spilled into the ground and burned into the air by the government.
Details of the EPA order: Up until now, Norfork Southern had voluntarily been doing the clean-up. But now they will be required to do so, and it will be done under a plan approved by the agency.
It includes:
Identify, clean, and/or remove contaminated soil and water
Pay for EPA-issued cleaning services for residents and businesses
Attend and participate in public meetings
EPA Administrator Michael Regan said: “Let me be clear: Norfolk Southern will pay for cleaning up the mess they created and for the trauma they’ve inflicted on this community.”
What is noticeably absent from the EPAs order is a mandate to cover long-term medical care for residents in the surrounding area. With chemical toxins, sometimes the efforts aren’t seen for a decade. Every resident should have access to free, routine monitoring and treatment for the rest of their lives.
Water and air quality update: The EPA continues to say both water and air are safe for residents. And in order to build faith, both Gov. Mike DeWine and Regan drank tap water from a resident’s home in East Palestine.
It’s worth noting that the EPA Administration mentioned above had initially planned a trip to Africa to talk about climate change with actor Idris Elba, despite the disaster in East Palestine. But he eventually canceled it due to public pressure.
