DESANTIS VS. DISNEY

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced his intention to end Disney World’s status as a special tax district, which essentially allows Disney to self-govern the land where its theme parks sit.
DeSantis said the Florida legislature “will be considering the termination of all special districts that were enacted in Florida prior to 1968.”
Let’s travel way back to 1967, Florida passed a law that essentially gave Disney the power to self-govern the ‘Reedy Creek Improvement District’ which includes Walt Disney World’s four theme parks, two water parks, a sports complex, hotels, stores, and restaurants. According to WSJ:
“The provision exempts the company from a host of regulations, and saves it tens of millions of dollars every year.”
The beef: DeSantis and Disney have clashed over the state’s newly-enacted ‘Parental Rights in Education’ bill which prohibits teaching students [in kindergarten through third grade] about gender identity and sexual orientation. Disney has vocally vowed to push to have the law repealed.
Real talk: If Disney’s special arrangement is appealed, it would be a major blow to the company. And it will be seen as a warning shot towards ‘woke’ companies that put the whimpers of a few activist employees over their shareholders.
The Florida legislature can take up DeSantis’ bill quickly.
