CALIFORNIA REPARATIONS
The California Reparations Task Force, a nine-member panel created by Gov. Gavin Newsom, decided that black state residents could receive up to $223,400 each in reparation payments in order to address past discrimination.
The details: The task force based its assessment on what it calls the “housing wealth gap” that black Californians allegedly experienced between 1933 and 1977.
Who is eligible for reparations?
The task force says “an individual being an African American descendant of a chattel enslaved person or the descendant of a free Black person living in the US prior to the end of the 19th century.”
Roughly 7% of California will be eligible.
The price tag: According to their calculations, the “housing wealth gap” cost black residents $5,074 per year.
Each person could receive up to $233,400
The total cost to fund this proposal would be $569 billion.
Big picture: It isn’t clear where the money would come from to fund such a bill. In 2022, California ran a $29 billion surplus… That won’t even cover 10% of the cost to fund this proposal.
What happens next?
The task force is expected to submit its final recommendation in 2023. At that point, the California legislature would have to approve it.
