Republicans have officially taken control of the U.S.
House of Representatives, assuring that Nancy Pelosi will no longer be Speaker of the House come January.
Details: Decision Desk HQ officially called the race yesterday after Republicans reached the 218-seat threshold needed to take the majority. As of right now, the balance of power is:
Republicans hold 219 seats
Democrats hold 206 seats
10 seats are still being decided
Big picture: Here is what a Republican majority means for the next two years:
Republicans have the power to block any spending bills or legislation that the Democrats and Joe Biden try to push. Huge.
Republicans now run all of the House committees, giving them the power to launch investigations, subpoena documents, and subpoena people for testimony.
Republicans can end the January 6 Committee.
Republicans have the power to impeach Joe Biden.
What happens next: Republicans will need to elect their Speaker of the House. Right now, it looks like Kevin McCarthy is the front-runner, after winning a preliminary vote yesterday (188-31). But he will need 218 votes during the public vote early next year.
