BIDEN THEN VS. BIDEN NOW
🗓️ Biden now: Joe Biden called for the abolition of the Senate filibuster rule yesterday [in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade] so that Democrats can pass a federal bill to allow abortions nationwide. Biden said:
“I believe we have to codify Roe v. Wade in the law… And if the filibuster gets in the way… we should require an exception to the filibuster for this action.”
The filibuster rule basically means that for a bill to pass the Senate, 60 senators must support it, rather than just a 50% majority.
🗓️ Biden then: In 2005, when Joe Biden was a senator and Democrats were in the minority, he was singing a different tune. Here’s how he felt about the filibuster then:
“[Eliminating the filibuster] is a fundamental power grab by the majority party, propelled by its extreme right and designed to change the reading of the Constitution.”
Unfortunately for flip-flop Joe, his wishes won’t be granted. Democrats would need 50 votes to eliminate the filibuster, and Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema both have re-affirmed that they will not do it:
Manchin’s spokesperson said: “Senator Manchin’s position has not changed.”
When the press asked Sinema’s office for her stance, they referred them to an op-ed she wrote in the past affirming her stance against eliminating the filibuster.
Sorry, Joe.
