ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DEEMED DANGEROUS AS ELON MUSK AND OTHER EXPERTS ASK FOR SIX MONTH PAUSE ON AI ADVANCEMENTS
Elon Musk and other leaders in the tech industry penned an open letter calling for a six-month pause on artificial intelligence (AI) advancements over concerns that it will pose “profound risks to society.”
Over the last year, we’ve seen a proliferation of AI in our everyday lives – from chatbots like ChatGPT to self-driving cars.
Let’s talk about the letter…
Who signed it? Over 1,000 experts in tech, including Musk, Sam Altman [the CEO of OpenAI which powers ChatGPT], Sundar Pichai [CEO of Google], Satya Nadella [CEO of Microsoft], Steve Wozniak [co-founder of Apple], and many more.
What are they worried about? Their letter, which warns that AI “can pose profound risks to society and humanity,” touches on several areas where they see immediate risk:
Fake information: “Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth?” [For example, have you seen the fake, AI-generated images of Trump being arrested?]
Job loss: “Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones?”
Outpacing human intelligence: “Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us?”
AI take-over: “Should we risk the loss of control of our civilization?”
Their action item: The letter calls on “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4” which is the current model behind ChatGPT.
It also calls on government leaders to step up and help determine what guardrails should be put in place.
AI will eventually have the power to do more damage than a nuclear bomb. And we must treat it the same way we treat advanced military weapons. There’s a reason that companies like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon can’t develop weapons for countries unless the U.S. okays it. My concern is that our political leaders are too stupid and too corrupt to make these decisions…
