The price of a 4th of July cookout in 2022 is up 17% from the summer of 2021 when the Biden White House bragged on Twitter that it had lowered the cost of a summer cookout by $0.16.

Back up: On July 1, 2021, the White House tweeted:

“The cost of a 4th of July cookout in 2021 is down $0.16 from last year”

This was a mere 1% decrease from 2020.

The numbers: Every year the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) puts out a report that calculates the average cost of a 4th of July cookout for 10 people.

In 2021 the average cost was $59.50

In 2022 the average cost is up to $69.68

Diving deeper: The AFBF looks at popular staple items like cheeseburgers, pork chops, chicken breasts, potato salad, strawberries, and ice cream.

The biggest increase came from group beef, which is up 36% from last year

Big picture: AFBF Chief Economist Roger Cryan wants to remind consumers that even though they’re paying more, farmers are still falling behind:

“In many cases the higher prices farmers are being paid aren’t covering the increase in their farm expenses. The cost of fuel is up and fertilizer prices have tripled.”
